  • Dead animals (un-slaughtered) or animals slaughtered in the name of other than Allah
  • Blood
  • Pig(swine) meat and pig byproducts
  • Intoxicants (Alcohol, drugs...etc)
  • Scholars have stated that smoking is also haram (forbiden) due to the damage and harm it does to the body

Earnings

A Muslim should always be conscious about his earnings and make sure that they are from halal sources.  Needless to say, Muslims should not work in gambling, prostitution, or selling intoxicants.  A Muslim should also avoid any kind of dealing involving interest (usury) whether with banks or other transactions.

Institutes where you can enroll or study Islam by correspondance:

As a new Muslim you need only to learn a few words of Arabic for the daily rituals such as reciting Faitha (The opening Chapter) of the Quran as well as a few other supplications for prayers.   However many converts as well as born Muslims (85% of which are non-Arabs) find that learning Arabic and being able to read the Quran in the language it was revealed, nourishes their faith and enhances their learning.  One way to get started on basic Arabic would probably be at your local mosque.
For those who have high aspirations and want a more rigorous program and have the means to travel, may be interested in the Fajr center of Egypt.
